The Stuttgart Ballet brings The Sleeping Beauty to Melbourne
By special invitation from the Australian Ballet, this October the Stuttgart Ballet
Company will bring the beloved fairytale, The Sleeping Beauty to life on stage,
exclusively in Melbourne.
This is a rare visit by one of the world’s leading Ballet Companies and the first time in
decades that the Stuttgart Ballet has made a trip downunder. Known as one of the elite top-tier Ballet Companies, along side the Paris Opera Ballet, Royal Ballet and American Ballet Theatre, the Stuttgart Ballet as we know it today, wasn’t always called that.
Back in its early beginnings, dating back to 1609, the Company started as the private
court ballet for the Dukes of Wurttemberg, later becoming the ballet ensemble of the
Wurttemberg State Theatre.
In 1961, the legendary choreographer, John Cranko, became the Company’s
Director, taking the Stuttgart Ballet to its most successful time in its history.
It was during this time in 1969, the Company, which was not very well known, did a
tour to New York and a dance critic called it the Stuttgart Ballet Miracle. This was
followed by many invitations for the Company to perform in theatres all around the
world, taking it from a local German troupe to an international sensation.
The Stuttgart Ballet Company’s performance of The Sleeping Beauty promises to be
world class, breathtaking and beautiful on a grand scale, with Tchaikovsky’s music
score performed by a 61 piece live orchestra.
