We all know the movie Grease, right!
One of the most iconic movies of all time, starring Australian famous superstar, Olivia
Newtown John in the role of Sandy, along-side Danny, played by the equally as famous,
John Travolta!
The scene is set in the summer holidays of 1958 and tells the story about Danny meeting
Australian Sandy on the beach and falling in love. At the end of the holidays, Sandy is sad at the thought they will never see each other again, but as it turns out, her parents decide to
remain in America and enroll her in the senior year at the same School as Danny, Rydell
High.
Sandy and Danny recount their summer love story to their friend’s group, Pink Ladies and T-
Birds, “Summer Nights,” and when Sandy mentions Danny’s name, Rizzo arranges a
surprise reunion between the two of them. Danny tries to act super cool in front of his T-Bird
mates and brushes Sandy aside, but then apologises to her the next day.
Along the way, the T-birds restore an old car, which Kenickie plans to street race in, and the
T-Birds perform “Greased “Lightnin” and Pink Lady ‘Frenchie’ drops out of Beauty School,
“Beauty School Drop Out,” after a disastrous class leaves her hair candy-pink and she
returns to finish her year at Rydell High.
The story continues with its ups and downs at the school dance whilst the cast perform “Born to Hand Jive” and then during a date night at the drive-in movies, “Stranded At The Drive-In,” but love endures and when Sandy and Danny meet up again at a Carnival, they realise they have changed for each other. Danny has a completely new look and is wearing a Rydell High ‘letterman sweater’ he earned in track sports. Sandy, with help from Frenchie, has replaced her sweet skirt and blouse look for black leathers, becoming a ‘greaser girl’ in order to impress Danny and they sing “You’re the One That I Want.”
The movie closes with the entire cast singing “We Go Together” as Sandy and Danny fly
away into the sky in the Greased Lightnin car.
Grease was released in 1978, becoming the highest grossing musical film at the time. In
1979 it received the ‘People’s Choice Award’ for the Favourite Overall Motion Picture and
Favourite Pop/Rock Album at the American Music Awards.
In recent years, the movie and two huge songs, “Summer Nights” and “You’re the One that I
Want” were entered into the Online Film & Television Association Film Hall of Fame.
Grease will always be remembered as one of the most stand out movies of all time, with a
great cast performing songs and scenes that will be loved by generation after generation.
