Lottie is an independent New Zealand artist, pouring her heart into her music. Her
debut EP ‘For What It’s Worth’, has been making waves on local charts and
streaming platforms.
Growing up, Charlotte (Lottie) always loved music and singing as well as studying
various styles of dance.
At the young age of six her Mum got her into piano lessons and a year later,
Charlotte began writing songs. She wanted to be like the American teen sitcom
‘Hannah Montana’ and would regularly go into her bedroom and write the lyrics in
her journal. She didn’t tell many people because the songs felt very personable, but
she had great support from her piano teacher, who would figure out the chords.
Charlotte always thought about the possibilities of going into the music industry, but it
was eventually a life changing experience that pushed it when her body had an
extremely rare allergic and near fatal reaction to medication by going into attack
mode, resulting in a rare auto immune disease.
“It was at this point that the saying ‘One Day’ meant so much to me because I think I
always had these little ideas and I thought one day or in another life,” said Charlotte.
“I never knew when I would start or if I even wanted to but then after I got sick, I was
like, ok, you need to go with your dream because it is not going to come to you. Your
life could change tomorrow and like mine, it did.”
Charlotte knew at that point, she needed to make a step in the right direction, no
matter how big or small and said it’s the spirit in you that makes you take that step.
Charlotte bought a microphone and found a demo backing track on YouTube. She
played around with it, adding the lyrics and then sent it off to some New Zealand
Producers that had a style she thought would suit hers. She received a response
from a Producer inviting her to Auckland for a session and that’s when her music
career kicked off.
Since then, she has released five songs, her latest being ‘Calling Her Baby’, which
came out on the 15th of August.
Lottie writes the lyrics along with her Producers/Co-writers, Ben Malone, Dan Martin
and Aubrie Mitchell, because she believes that two minds can find better ways to
word a song. Each Producer writes the music in the room with her, and she has a lot
of say in it, as she finds she gets more out of collaborating together.
Charlotte believes in life there is always a plus and a minus with pros and cons. She
believes the pros are that life is so much more fun and that she appreciates and
looks at it more preciously now. The cons are that her new normal is completely
different with having to take medication every day to keep the pain at bay. “That has been the hardest thing,” said Charlotte. “Even though I am so grateful that
I am alive, the new normal is a lot tougher, like ‘season two’ of my life.”
Lottie has just embarked on her first headline tour and performed to a welcoming
crowd on August 15th in her hometown of Palmerston North, with shows planned in
Auckland and Wellington.
On September 13th and 14th, we are excited to welcome Lottie to Melbourne, where she
will teach a dance workshop to the CDS students, sign merch and perform live at the
first CDS community night.
